Signature Block Projects
As I was planning The Craft Table second year anniversary celebration and preparing the signature quilt block tutorial, I started thinking of all the signature blocks I had made in the past.
For the most part, I made signature blocks to go along with all the different bee blocks sent over the years.
I used the signature blocks received with MY bee blocks as the quilt label on the back.
Then there was the Modern Siggy Swap with Rachel of P.S. I Quilt. These blocks were made the same way as the tutorial I posted, but the measurements are a bit different. Here the background squares are 3.5” and the two print fabrics are 2.5” square.
In addition to making blocks to send to others, I also used signature blocks collected for special occasion quilts, liked my son’s wedding and my grandson’s birth.
I had prepped squares of fabric backed with freezer paper and placed in a basket along with permanent fabric pens so guests could write messages for the bride and groom. These squares were then pieced into a quilt back. I used that for the back of the quilt made below, based on one of their favorite songs.
Signature blocks can also be used as a baby shower activity. I made rectangular blocks based on the Modern Siggy Swap Round 2 design for my grandson’s baby shower and guests wrote (and drew) messages on the blocks during the party.
This time around, instead of the back, I used the blocks for the front of the quilt.
I pieced my grandson’s name for the center of the quilt and used the signature blocks as a type of border..
I hope these examples help you in your own quilt projects. There are so many examples of signature blocks and quilts that incorporate them. It is a wonderful tradition. Feel free to leave a comment on how you have used signature quilt blocks.
There is a step by step blog tutorial for making the signature blocks requested for The Craft Table’s second anniversary, as well as a video tutorial on our YouTube channel. I hope you’ll check them out!
Happy stitching,
