A Colorful {Pillow} Finish
I have shared my stitching progress on instagram and YouTube, and I now have turned that stitching into a colorful pillow cushion! Isn’t she lovely?! The colors match perfectly with my blue velvet chair at home, but I don’t trust my puppy not to damage the stitching with his nails, so the pillow has been relocated to the studio.
The fabric is a panel designed by Carolyn Gavin for Conservatory Craft of FreeSpirit fabrics. I followed this tutorial by Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts for making the envelope style back. It’s my go to way of finishing pillows because it is super simple and no zippers are involved!
I hope you enjoy seeing some close up photos of the embroidery stitches. I typically like to stitch with 8wt Perle cotton, but for this project I went with the size 5. Of course I chose Sue Spargo’s Eleganza by Wonderfil Specialty Threads. I really like how the thicker weight adds more texture.
The colors in the fabric are so brilliant! I wanted the thread and stitches to highlight the fabric design - not cover it up. The fun (well besides the actually embroidering) was in selecting which thread color and embroidery stitch to apply where! This project was such a joyful process that I want to do it again ….
… so I am! This summer I will embellish another Blue Magic panel, and I invite you to stitch along with me. Maybe you want to embroider this beautiful panel too and want some company. Or possibly you have another fabric piece that you would like to embellish and need some guidance. Or it could be that you are looking for something creative to do this summer and have always wanted to give embroidery a try. Let’s stitch together and cheer each other on! If this sounds like something you are interested in, you can go here to be notified when all the details are released. I am looking forward to it!
